Sweating During Sports: Good, But Not Everywhere
This article covers how to manage sweating during exercise.
Sweating During Sports - It's Natural!
Sweating when you're playing sports or working out is totally normal. When you're active, your body heats up, and sweating is how it cools down. It's actually a really important way to keep your body at the right temperature.
When Does Sweating Become a Problem?
While sweating during sports is expected, sometimes it can cause a few issues, like:
- Too much sweat in your private area: This can irritate your skin and cause some not-so-great smells.
- Sweating way too much: For some people, sweating happens so much that it gets in the way of their daily life.
Sweating During Sports is a Good Thing
Sports are one of those times when sweating always comes up. When you're pushing your body, you're gonna sweat. Unlike sweating in some other situations, sweating during sports is a completely natural process. When you're working out, your body temperature rises. Sweating is your body's way of cooling things down. As the sweat evaporates off your skin, it takes heat with it, and that cools you off a bit.
Even dripping sweat during sports is usually fine if you're working really hard or it's super hot. Still, there are a few things to keep in mind: First off, make sure you're drinking enough. About half an hour to an hour before you start, drink about half a liter of water. Then, while you're active, have a glass of water every fifteen minutes. If you're not working out too hard, you can drink a little less, and if you're really going for it or it's hot out, drink a little more. Usually, low-carbonation mineral water, tea, or diluted juice are perfect. If you're working out really hard or for a long time, switch to sports drinks to replace the minerals you're losing. Breathable clothes help prevent you from overheating and also reduce sweating a little. Dressing in layers lets you adjust your clothes so you're always just the right temperature. A deodorant can help prevent odors.
Even more important is to shower and change your clothes right after you're done. That not-so-great smell from sweat happens when bacteria break it down. If you change your clothes and wash up right after sports, you won't have to worry about the smell. Also, make sure your clothes are either antibacterial or washed at 60 degrees Celsius, or treated with antibacterial stuff like soaking them in vinegar water or using special laundry detergent. Otherwise, bacteria can get stuck in your clothes and cause smells the next time you wear them.
